In Western lore, dragons have often been vilified. They are evil monsters who breathe fire, annihilating what is right in front of them. These creatures of destruction were enemies to be slaughtered by the knights in shining armor.
In contrast, dragons hold a coveted place in Eastern culture. For the Chinese, the dragon is one of the four celestial guardians along with the Tiger, Phoenix and Tortoise. In particular, it is the Green Dragon who watches over the east. Being one of the most, if not the most, auspicious symbol for the Chinese, the dragon was a sign of the emperor.
The dragon is a creature of great strength, who is imbued with wisdom, power, and wealth. The zealous and decisive dragon cannot help but draw attention. The dragon is seen as a great storehouse of energy possessing much ambition and achieving success. The dragon is very loyal to its loved ones, does not waste time on lies and pretensions, and must have a strong sense of purpose to keep his fire alive.
On the flipside, it is not a pleasant task to oppose or get on the bad side of the dragon. The dragon can be unreasonable, demanding and haughty. The dragon possesses a fiery temper and is definitely not the master of tact.
There are five different dragons according to the elements: the metal dragon, the earth dragon, the wood dragon, the fire dragon, and the less overbearing water dragon whose year we celebrate in 2012.
This mythical creature is the fifth animal sign in the Chinese zodiac, which has a cycle of 12 years. 7 to 9 in the morning are considered as the hours of the dragon. The dragon’s closest allies are the rat and the monkey while its secret friend is the rooster. Clashes are most likely to arise between the dragon and the dog.
For the year of the Dragon, I suggest that you put together a dragon, a pearl and a key for good luck. Dragons are often depicted with pearls. Pearls have been said to be tears of the moon. They may also be a sign of the dragon’s wisdom as reflected in the phrase “pearls of wisdom.” A number of stories have abounded about certain dragons possessing an all-powerful-pearl that they deeply treasured since not all dragons have this magical gem. Interestingly enough a Chinese-Australian film entitled “The Dragon Pearl” was first released in 2011. It revolves around the story of two children who seek to reunite an ancient golden dragon with his missing pearl that was once lent to an emperor eons ago in order to help the emperor protect his kingdom. Keys on the other hand symbolize the ability to open and close doors. Keys can allow us to discover a new world and to unveil what was once hidden and guarded.
